A model of a traditional Hawaiian building at the Puuhonua o Honaunau ('City of Refuge') National Historic Park. There were several of these 'cities' around the island. Anyone who had broken certain kinds of laws (kapu) would be absolved if they could make it to one of these cities. Also, the elderly, the very young, and women could find shelter here during war time.
