    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Research Notes: Herman’s name is given as “George” on his birth certificate. It is almost certainly him, though, as Minnie had only four children and the other three are accounted for.

    • Census: 1910, Chicago, Cook County, Illinois, USA

Minnie (daughter of Johan Knuth and Sophia Kortuer) was born on 3 Dec 1859 in Pommern, Prussia; died on 11 Mar 1944 in Norwood Park, Chicago, Cook County, Illinois, USA; was buried on 15 Mar 1944 in Forest Home Cemetery, Chicago, Cook County, Illinois, USA. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 3.  Minnie Knuth was born on 3 Dec 1859 in Pommern, Prussia (daughter of Johan Knuth and Sophia Kortuer); died on 11 Mar 1944 in Norwood Park, Chicago, Cook County, Illinois, USA; was buried on 15 Mar 1944 in Forest Home Cemetery, Chicago, Cook County, Illinois, USA.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Research Notes: Nora White gives Minnie’s birthplace as “Schwenmunder, East Germany (now Poland).” It seem likely that this is actually Swinemünde (now Świnoujście, Poland). According to the 1900 and 1910 censuses, Minnie had four children, three of whom were still living. Minnie’s name appears crossed-out in the 1880 census entry for her father’s household. She probably left the household shortly before the census.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Also Known As: John
    • Also Known As: Wilhelm Emil
    • Cause of Death: Asthma
    • Occupation: Seaman, furniture finisher
    • Research Notes: According to Elaine Schoelzel (and her mother Emma Knuth Schoelzel), his name was Wilhelm Emil, but the 1880 census and emigration records list Johan. The children’s names and ages match other information about the family and Johan is listed as a seaman on the passenger list, which matches information from Nora White that he was a sailor on the ship which brought the family to America. (Nora is a descendant of Minnie Knuth.) Entry in the 1880 census appears on the same page as Jacob Oestmann. Jacob’s daughter Anna married Johan’s son Charles in 1875.
    • Immigration: 20 Apr 1870, New York, New York County, New York, USA

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Also Known As: Sophie
    • Cause of Death: General arterial sclerosis with acute bronchitis
    • Research Notes: Full maiden name is given on the death certificate of Sophia’s daughter Emelia. Last name is difficult to read. Perhaps “Kortuer” or “Korthauer.”
    • Immigration: 20 Apr 1870, New York, New York County, New York, USA
    • Census: 1880, Chicago, Cook County, Illinois, USA

    Notes:

Had lived in Illinois for 32 years at the time of her death, putting her emigration in 1870-71. Sophie is buried at Forest Home with her daughter Minnie and son-in-law Henry Leutz. The three of them share a single headstone (along with two of Henry and Minnie’s sons). Sophia’s death place is given on her death certificate as 896 Crystal St., this is also her residence in an 1898 Chicago directory. This address is the residence of her daughter Augusta and son-in-law August Hagen. She does not appear in the 1900 census in their household, however.
