Research Notes | It is unclear whether the birth record cited actually corresponds to Emma. Her birth date is given as 29 March 1891 in the New Jersey birth index. However, Elizabeth Bylsma did not arrive from the Netherlands until 11 May 1891. Perhaps the date was mis-transcribed and was actually 29 May 1891. This might also explain why Elizabeth and Henry were married just two days after her arrival in New York, as she would have arrived pregnant and nearly full term. Henry had come to the US in April 1890, so unless there was an additional undocumented Atlantic passage by either Elizabeth or Henry, Emma’s biological father cannot be Henry DeVries. [2] | |
