Generation: 2

  1. 2.  Carl Louis Wegener was born about 1834 in Germany; died about 1894.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Also Known As: Louis
    • Occupation: Laborer
    • Research Notes: Paulina’s entry in the 1900 census indicates she is widowed and had been married for 13 years, which would put Carl Louis’s death in about 1894.

Carl married Paulina Schoelzel on 24 Sep 1881 in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois, USA. Paulina (daughter of Johann Gotfried Schoelzel and Susanna Helena Dinter) was born in Jul 1849 in Germany; died on 27 Jun 1917 in Central State Hospital, Lakeland, Jefferson County, Kentucky, USA; was buried in 1917 in Highland Cemetery, Covington, Kenton County, Kentucky, USA. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 3.  Paulina Schoelzel was born in Jul 1849 in Germany (daughter of Johann Gotfried Schoelzel and Susanna Helena Dinter); died on 27 Jun 1917 in Central State Hospital, Lakeland, Jefferson County, Kentucky, USA; was buried in 1917 in Highland Cemetery, Covington, Kenton County, Kentucky, USA.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Also Known As: Pauline
    • Research Notes: The information about Paulina and her descendants rests upon her marriage to Carl Louis Wegener. There is no sure evidence that she is the correct Paulina Schoelzel, but her details seem to match up well: birth year reasonable given ages of her parents and siblings, married in Chicago shortly after arriving with her mother, moved to Kentucky, etc. The most definitive evidence for a connection is the addresses of her mother’s death in January 1890 and her son’s birth in July 1890: both records list 104 Johnston Ave (now 2933 W. Lyndale Street).
    • Immigration: 1881
    • Census: 1900, Brown Township, Ripley County, Indiana, USA
    • Census: 1910, Latonia, Kenton County, Kentucky, USA
    • Residence: Jan 1917, Latonia, Kenton County, Kentucky, USA
    • Residence: Apr 1917, Lakeland, Jefferson County, Kentucky, USA

    Notes:

Elaine Schoelzel says, “said to have come to the USA with her mother and ultimately moved to Kentucky.”

According to 1900 census, Paulina had seven children, six surviving. Her son Charles Frank’s birth certificate indicates he is her seventh child.

  1. 6.  Johann Gotfried Schoelzel was born on 10 Sep 1807 in Peilau, Reichenbach, Schlesien, Prussia; died in Aug 1881 in Oslowo, Westpreußen, Prussia.

[Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Research Notes: Nieder Peilau Schlössel, Kreis Reichenbach, Schlesien is now Piława Dolna, Poland. Death certificate gives name as Paulina Helena Schoelzel. Elaine Schoelzel and the death certificate of Ernst Wilhelm Schoelzel both give Susana Helena. Elaine Schoelzel lists birth date as 11 Nov 1812, but separately says she was “considerably younger” than her husband; the date recorded here is based on her age at death as listed on her death certificate.

    Notes:

Moved to Chicago with grandchildren August Emil Berthold and Rudolph Herman Albert (Schoelzel). Death certificate lists time of residence in Illinois as 8 years, which would put her immigration in 1881-1882.
