    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Occupation: Church janitor
    • Research Notes: It is unclear which spouse of John Anthony Whalen was Tom’s mother. His birth certificate lists her name as “Mary Gurley,” but lists her birthplace as Scotland. Harriett Gurley was born in Massachusetts, but Mary Dunlop was born in Scotland. According to the Social Security Applications and Claims Index, his mother’s name was Mary J. Dunlope.

Thomas married Josephine Mary Glowka in 1940 in Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts, USA, and was divorced about 1945. Josephine (daughter of Józef Piotr Główka and Katarzyna Ziemba) was born on 11 Mar 1918 in Central Falls, Providence County, Rhode Island, USA; died on 3 Jun 1980 in Boca Raton, Palm Beach County, Florida, USA; was buried on 5 Jun 1980. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 3.  Josephine Mary Glowka was born on 11 Mar 1918 in Central Falls, Providence County, Rhode Island, USA (daughter of Józef Piotr Główka and Katarzyna Ziemba); died on 3 Jun 1980 in Boca Raton, Palm Beach County, Florida, USA; was buried on 5 Jun 1980.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Occupation: Domestic
    • Research Notes: Her mother’s Petition for Naturalization gives Josephine’s birthplace as Central Falls, Massachusetts. Central Falls is actually in Rhode Island. Confirmed to be Central Falls, Rhode Island in email message from Joseph Whalen, quoting her birth certificate. Listed in the 1930 census as “Joseph Jr.”

    Notes:

According to Joseph Whalen, Josephine met Tom Whalen in high school(?) in Milford, Massachusetts (there was no high school in Bellingham at the time). Married shortly after high school. Family did not want her to marry Thomas because he was Irish and from Milford. She was going to name her son Tom, but her family would not allow it. Josephine was excommunicated from The Church because of her divorce from Thomas. Their children were raised by her parents. Worked as a live-in maid in Boston family for a time (for the Gilman family, owners of a large liquor store). Moved to Florida suddenly and bought a triplex.

Generation: 3

  1. 4.  John Anthony Whalen was born on 19 Dec 1888 in Antigonish, Antigonish County, Nova Scotia, Canada; was christened on 24 Dec 1888 in St. Ninian’s Cathedral, Antigonish, Antigonish County, Nova Scotia, Canada (son of William James Whalen and Annie McInnis); died on 21 Nov 1940 in Milford, Worcester County, Massachusetts, USA; was buried on 23 Nov 1940 in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Milford, Worcester County, Massachusetts, USA.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Occupation: Chauffeur
    • Occupation: Lineman
    • Occupation: Mechanic
    • Occupation: Traffic manager, paper company
    • Research Notes: I originally recorded a single wife for John (Mary Dunlop), with whom he had all five children. However, Thomas Whalen’s birth certificate lists his mother’s maiden name as “Gurley,” not “Dunlop.” Also, Thomas and William were born before John’s marriage to Mary Dunlop. John’s WWI draft card indicates that he was already married as of 1917, which would indicate an earlier marriage. Finally, I found a marriage in Danvers, Essex County, Massachusetts in 1909 between John Anthony Whalen and Harriett L. Gurley. I now believe Harriett is the mother of William (William’s birth register entry gives his mother’s name as “Mary H L Girlie”), but also possibly Thomas. I have since found a record for a subsequent marriage between Harriett and Israel Marion which indicates that Harriett had been divorced. This is reflected on John Whalen’s marriage certificate to Mary Dunlop. At the time of the 1920 census, there was another Whalen family living at the same address as John and Mary. Annie, aged 58, was widowed and worked as a cook at the State House. Florence Black (listed as “partner”), aged 46 and single. Both were born in Canada.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Also Known As: Joseph Peter
    • Cause of Death: Bladder cancer
    • Occupation: Card stripper, woolen mill
    • Occupation: Cobbler, gardener, chicken farmer, textile worker (carder)
    • Occupation: Laborer (WPA waterworks project)
    • Occupation: Mill hand (woolen mill)
    • Religion: Roman Catholic
    • Research Notes: Various records give his birthplace as Celinów, Mińsk Mazowiecki, or Warszawa. It is likely he was born in Celinów, but gave Mińsk Mazowiecki (the nearest town of any size) or Warszawa (the nearest major city) for convenience. Celinów was in the Mińsk, Mazowiecki parish. A Josef Glowka passed through Ellis Island in July 1913, coming from Nowominsk, Russia, which is now Mińsk Mazowiecki, Poland (pronounced “Ma-zo-vyet-ski”) and is located a short distance southeast of Warsaw. It appears he was accompanied by Maryanna Glowka. Perhaps this is his sister. Death certificate gives birthdate of 13 November 1890. WWI Draft Registration gives 1 September 1894. Other records give 1 November 1894. His indexed birth record gives 1893 (with a relatively high record number, meaning late in the year), so I have recorded it as 1 November 1893. 1950 census lists age as 58.

    Notes:

Arrived in US through Ellis Island just before WWI (1913?). In Warsaw, he worked as a cobbler and as a city park service gardener. Left Poland to get away from a bad political situation (perhaps to avoid conscription). Probably lied about his age when he entered the country (or when he got married).

Had several siblings, including one sister in Poland and two (?) in US. Known as “Pa.” Had a big vegetable garden. Was fond of blackberry brandy. Name is pronounced “Gloof-ka” in Polish; means “head” or “big head.”

In 1942, he worked for City Mills in Norfolk, Massachusetts.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Also Known As: Catherine
    • Also Known As: Katie
    • Occupation: Helper, cotton mill
    • Occupation: Home maker
    • Religion: Roman Catholic
    • Research Notes: Joseph Whalen gives name as “Katerina Zieba.” Husband’s death certificate and obituary of son Victor give “Katharzyna Zemba.” Massachusetts Death Index lists Katharzy M. Glowka. Birth certificate of daughter Amelia lists “Katie Zaba.” Social Security Applications and Claims Index entry for son Edward lists surname as “Ziemba.” Obituary of son William gives surname as “Zenbia.” I have chosen to use “Ziemba” as this is the name on her Petition for Naturalization, which she herself would have completed. Joseph Whalen gives birthplace as Kraków, Poland (but not in Kraków proper). Her Naturalization Petition lists Morki (or Marki), Austria. Marki is just northeast of Warsaw, about 40km from the birthplace of her husband. On the other hand, this area was under Russian, rather than Austrian control from before her birth until the end of the WWI. If there was another Marki/Morki in Austrian-controlled Poland (Galicia), I have been unable to find it.

Before coming to US, lived in a thatched-roof house in dire poverty. Met Joseph Glowka in Fall River (MA/RI) and probably married there. Had relatives there before coming to US. One of her children was a twin, but the other child died at birth.

Emigrated via Bremen, Germany aboard the Kaiser Wilhelm II, arriving in New York on 23 April 1913.
