Notes |
- Following the failure of his father’s bank, the First Trust and Savings Bank of Hammond (Indiana), “principal responsibility” for the failure fell upon Walter. In December of 1931, a grand jury indicted him on 16 counts of financial malfeasance, primarily related to making unauthorized loans. On 9 February 1932, Walter plead guilty to two counts of making unauthorized loans. He was fined and sentenced to 2-14 years of prison time.
Walter was imprisoned at the Indiana State Prison at Michigan City on 10 February 1932. He had been ill prior to his incarceration, but was “thought to be recovered” prior to his sentencing. He died in prison from pneumonia 17 days later. [10, 13, 14, 15]
