Research Notes | Various records give his birthplace as Celinów, Mińsk Mazowiecki, or Warszawa. It is likely he was born in Celinów, but gave Mińsk Mazowiecki (the nearest town of any size) or Warszawa (the nearest major city) for convenience. Celinów was in the Mińsk, Mazowiecki parish. A Josef Glowka passed through Ellis Island in July 1913, coming from Nowominsk, Russia, which is now Mińsk Mazowiecki, Poland (pronounced “Ma-zo-vyet-ski”) and is located a short distance southeast of Warsaw. It appears he was accompanied by Maryanna Glowka. Perhaps this is his sister. Death certificate gives birthdate of 13 November 1890. WWI Draft Registration gives 1 September 1894. Other records give 1 November 1894. His indexed birth record gives 1893 (with a relatively high record number, meaning late in the year), so I have recorded it as 1 November 1893. 1950 census lists age as 58. [2, 6, 9, 10] | |
